A very difficult to acquire, pair of French, Paris decorated,
19th century lamps in Chinoiserie style.
The lamps with a creamy, pale yellow ground colour
and decorated with figure subjects in exotic oriental landscapes.
“In true Chinoiserie fairyland, Mandarins lived in fanciful, mountainous landscapes with cobweb bridges.
They carried flower parasols and lolled in flimsy bamboo pavilions
haunted by dragons and phœnixes
with animated monkeys swinging from scrolling borders,
always delicately drawn and full of free flowing movement
with beautifully balanced composition”.
The central figure subjects of Chinese dignitaries
in rich, Kingfisher blue, silk frock coats,
wide sleeved jackets and broad sashes, tied at the waist,
the jackets over decorated with gilded rank badges.
The exotic, fanciful figures wearing swords hung from the sashes,
and wearing up turned slippers, a la Turk!
The Chinese gentlemen standing on embroided carpets
which appear to be suspended in mid air!
The reverse sides of the lamps painted with large blue Peacocks
perched in flowering branches.
True to the Chinoiserie style,
the lamps are decorated with an all-over
collection of imaginary oriental motifs, pagodas,
palms and C scrolls.
The lamps supported on shaped scroll bases
with touches of gilding.
These very decorative lamps
have had some restoration to the bases.
The lamps fitted with gilt wood caps.
